Creating a Sacred Space

The sacredness of Godly Play at Home can be enriched by having a designated space or home altar.  (This is optional.)

Allow family members to include any items they find meaningful.  Just as with the Wondering and Creativity components of Godly Play, it is best to refrain from judgement.  If your child wants to place a toy truck on your home altar, only he or she knows why that item feels sacred.  It is a personal offering, and that should be honored.  The more respect you show for it, the more sacred the space becomes for that child.

Examples of items you might include: a candle, pieces from your family’s Nativity set, a small cross, a plaque or handwritten bible verse, an Advent wreath, photos from family baptisms, a bible and/or a book of common prayer.  The Dollar Store and Goodwill can be a source for great finds.

You might want to keep your Godly Play story materials in baskets or decorated boxes nearby.  Also, if you wish to deepen your collection of Godly Play materials, it can be both fun and affordable.  See the following pages for resources and ideas.
GODLY PLAY PRAYER
May the Good Shepherd
who knows all of the sheep by name
lead you the good green pastures,
and stay with you through the times of desert.
May you find your pearl of great price,
and know that you journey with the People of God,
who are as many as the stars in the sky
and as many as the grains of sand in the desert.
STARTING YOUR OWN COLLECTION OF STORIES AND MATERIALS

Godly Play Resources & Worship Woodworks - To expand your collection of story materials, look at the story sets on the Godly Play Resources and Worship Woodworks websites.  In most cases, you don’t need to purchase from these websites; you can use them to get ideas and then create and scavenger to complete your own sets!

People of God Figures - Purchasing or creating a set of “People of God” figures is a worthy investment, because they can be used for many different stories, and are great for imaginative play during Work Time.  Sets of wood figures can be purchased from the above websites.  Other options include Lauri Puzzle People or Wooden Peg People, or any play figurines you might have at home.

Nativity (Holy Family) Set – A child-friendly nativity set is great for both storytelling and for creative play during Work Time.  Simple wood carved sets can be found online, on Amazon or eBay (just make sure the pieces are large enough if you have small children).
