Music Ministry

Our music calls us to experience God in worship as it disciples our hearts and minds for Christian living.

“My heart is firmly fixed, O God,
my heart is fixed;
I will sing and make melody.
Wake up, my spirit;
Awake, lute and harp;
I myself will awaken the dawn.”

Psalm 57:7-8

Our music is grounded in the rhythms of Anglican worship. We draw from the breadth and richness of Christian worship locally and globally. The Church is a living family whose members speak to one another across time and space!

This means that on Sundays you’ll hear music from a range of sources and styles—a coherent variety of Christian voices that converge and theologically “harmonize” with one another for the glory of God and the building-up of the congregation.

On any given Sunday, song selections take their cue from the lectionary (the readings for the day) and the liturgical calendar (the season of the church year we are in--for example, Lent, Easter, or Christmastide.)

Choir

Sunday mornings, 9:00-10:00 AM.

The choir joyfully leads the first half of our 10:15 AM services in traditional and contemporary hymnody each Sunday. There is no audition process, but all choir members must feel comfortable reading music to competently sing their part. Feeling uncertain? Contact Berit to shadow a rehearsal!

Praise Band

Wednesday evenings, 7:15-8:30 PM. Occasionally we may move rehearsals to 8:45 AM on Sundays and rehearse jointly with the choir.

Good Shepherd’s praise band is a dynamic ensemble featuring a variety of instruments, styles, and worship expressions. They partner with the choir and soloists in the 10:15 AM service. Musicians contribute to services on a rotating basis.

There are no auditions, but band members should be competent in their instrument of choice, be able to read music and chord charts, and be able to receive and apply direction. We hope you join us!

Berit Goetz, Music Director

Berit began her ministry with us in 2020, and we are so grateful for her dedication to the growth of our music program. She earned her M.A.R. in Music and Religion at Yale Divinity School and the Institute of Sacred Music, and her B.A. in Music at Brown University. Previously, she was Artist-in-Residence at Messiah Episcopal Church in St. Paul, MN.

In addition to her work at Good Shepherd, Berit teaches voice and piano privately and records and performs with her songwriting project, Mystery and Manners.
